Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a business plan?

A business plan is one of the most essential elements of a business. Don't see writing your business plan as a chore or something you have to do. See your business plan as an opportunity to lay out your business, and your objectives for the business in the short-term and long-term. It is important to demonstrate to prospective investors and lenders your plans for the business, how it will grow and develop, and why it's an excellant business opportunity.

How long should my business plan be?

There is no definitive answer to this question, I've read business plans as short as ten pages, and as long as hundred. The length of the business plan really depends on who you are writing a business plan for and what your end goal is. Sometimes the golden rule "less is more" applies.

However, if you are planing to present your business plan to potential investors in order to raise significant capital, the plan should be very detailed, outlining every aspect of the business both now and in the future.

Should I hire someone to write my business plan?

It's completely up to you!

Many businesses hire consultants to write their business plans, but writing your own business plan has significant advantages. No one knows more about your business than you do, and  writing your business plan will allow you to evaluate your business and recognise your strengths and weakness.

If you aren’t confident about writing your business plan, write a draft and have someone review it and help rewrite it if necessar

Do I need a business plan to apply for SEIS and EIS advance assurance?

Yes!

It is a requirement that a business plan must be submitted with the Advance Assurance application. A pitch deck or information memorandum is not a qualifying alternative, however, these also must be submitted if they are intended to be distributed to investors. It is important to submit the most up to date business plan, this increases the validity of the advance assurance.
